In the Service of Heritage
Via et Cloister was founded on the conviction that rigorous archaeological research should be accessible beyond the walls of institutions — delivered remotely, without compromise to quality or scholarly integrity. Based in Western Australia, we have specialist knowledge of the archaeology, history, and material culture of England, Scotland, Wales, Israel, and Jordan, with additional expertise in the historical record of Rome. We have extensive experience in religious history and archaeology — especially the built form of churches and monastic buildings, their planning, architecture, and development across time.
Method
Our Approach
Every project undertaken by Via et Cloister is grounded in primary source analysis, archival investigation, and close engagement with the material and documentary record. We do not offer generic reports — each commission is treated as a discrete scholarly undertaking, tailored to the specific period, site type, and client need.
Primary Source First
All analysis begins with the original record — excavation archives, cartographic evidence, documentary sources, and material culture — rather than secondary synthesis.
Period Specialisation
Our expertise is concentrated in classical antiquity, the medieval period, and monastic archaeology, allowing for depth of knowledge that generalist consultancies cannot offer.
Remote Delivery
All services are delivered entirely remotely, enabling us to work with clients across regions and countries without the overhead of site visits where desk-based analysis suffices. Where a site visit is essential to the work, we are willing to travel.
Scholarly Rigour
Reports are produced to academic standards, with full citation apparatus, transparent methodology, and conclusions proportionate to the evidence.
